The quest titled There Can Be Only One is one of the most celebrated side missions in The Witcher 3 Blood and Wine expansion. It challenges Geralt of Rivia to embody the five chivalric virtues of Toussaint to earn the legendary silver sword known as Aerondight. Successfully completing these trials requires careful decision-making across various regional quests throughout the sunny duchy.
Starting the Trials of Virtue at Lac Célavy
To begin this journey, head directly to the small island in the middle of Lac Célavy, located northwest of Beauclair. There you will find a mysterious hermit standing on the water who explains the five chivalric virtues: Compassion, Generosity, Honor, Valor, and Wisdom. Reading the inscriptions on the nearby stone tablets offers optional lore and context regarding each required virtue.
Demonstrating Compassion, Generosity, and Wisdom
Proving your compassion can be achieved early during main story events by sparing the captured Shaelmaar after defeating it in the arena. Generosity is straightforward, as tipping the young boy five crowns when he delivers a letter in Beauclair easily satisfies the requirement. For wisdom, correctly solving the riddle during the quest The Beast of Toussaint by choosing the greenhouse option grants this virtue instantly.
Proving Honor, Valor, and Claiming Aerondight
Honor is earned during the tourney quest line by accepting and winning the mounted duel against Prince Anséis when challenged. Valor requires completing tough combat encounters, such as winning the knight tournament championship or slaying dangerous contract beasts. Once all five virtues are validated, return to the lake, defeat the hermit in a duel, and receive Aerondight from the Lady of the Lake.
